Oh so troublesome building those bridges as i have come to know first hand as of late as may have many of you.I hit a snag while working on one of my bridge building projects,ran into a bit of un level ground,disappointing really.But then as i was turning away from that episode to re coop a bit i was blessed with another friend who was very much interested in building bridges so a shout out to Jansen way over there in Poland,Merry Christmas buddy and look forward to talking more with you.So Georgy Porgy as far as your attempt at building a bridge and the gap at times feels as if it only gets longer all i can say is i feel for you.There is a however! However i am sorry to say that i can't offer too much sympathy for you Mr.President because i do my own homework on the topic of today or at least what should be the topic,and that's been a lot of hard work.You on the other hand should be an expert by now on the should be topic of the day and everyday for the last six yrs and longer with all the help at your disposal.So while in some way i feel for you i have to say all in all you are still just another putz.Get a clue or get out!! Bush on Wednesday sent a message of goodwill to Muslims worldwide at the start of the major Muslim Eid al-Adha festival of sacrifice. "During Eid al-Adha, Muslims around the world reflect on Abraham's unwavering faith and his trust in God when asked to sacrifice his son," Bush said in the message. "These four days are a time for Muslims to honour Abraham's obedience by celebrating with family and friends and showing gratitude for the many blessings bestowed by God. "This holiday also helps ensure the important values of compassion and devotion are passed on to future generations," the message continued. Bush also paid tribute to the role played by Muslims in America, saying they "enriched" multicultural US society. "The kindness, generosity, and goodwill displayed by American Muslims during this special occasion and throughout the year have contributed to the strength and vitality of our Nation," the message stated. "May all those observing Eid al-Adha find love and warmth during this joyous holiday. Laura and I send our best wishes for a memorable celebration," the message ended. Eid al-Adha, which lasts through Saturday, is one of the most important Muslim holidays. It commemorates the Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael to Allah. "These four days are a time for Muslims to honour Abraham's obedience by celebrating with family and friends and showing gratitude for the many blessings bestowed by God." "Honor Abraham's obedience." What is said is not always heard the way it is meant. In speaking of Abraham, even when doing so in the context of Eid al-Adha, Bush probably thinks of Genesis 22:15-18, in which Abraham is rewarded for his faith and told he will become a blessing to the nations: And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven, and said, "By myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this, and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will indeed bless you, and I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore. And your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies, and by your descendants shall all the nations of the earth bless themselves, because you have obeyed my voice." But when Bush congratulates Muslims on Eid al-Adha and exhorts them to honor Abraham, what does his audience hear? Most Muslims don't read Genesis. When they think of Abraham, they think of Qur'an passages such as (60:4): There is for you an excellent example (to follow) in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people: "We are clear of you and of whatever ye worship besides Allah: we have rejected you, and there has arisen, between us and you, enmity and hatred for ever, unless ye believe in Allah and Him alone." But not when Abraham said to his father: "I will pray for forgiveness for thee, though I have no power (to get) aught on thy behalf from Allah." (They prayed): "Our Lord! in Thee do we trust, and to Thee do we turn in repentance: to Thee is (our) Final Goal. Did you catch that? This verse is saying that Abraham is an "excellent example" (uswa hasana, أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ, a term applied also to Muhammad in 33:21). Abraham is an excellent example to follow when he says to the polytheists that there is "enmity and hatred forever" between him and them, unless they "believe in Allah and Him alone." However, the Qur'an also tells us that he is not an excellent example to follow when he says to his pagan father, "I will pray for forgiveness for thee." Hatred is held up as exemplary; forgiveness is explicitly ruled out. When Bush tells Muslims to "honor Abraham's obedience," he is thus inadvertently reinforcing a worldview that takes for granted the legitimacy of everlasting enmity and hatred between Muslims and non-Muslims -- and doing so precisely in the context of trying to build bridges between Muslims and non-Muslims. Honor Abraham's obedience, says the President: hate the kuffar. This demonstrates once again how vitally important it is for Bush, and for the rest of us, to have a detailed understanding of the theological and cultural frame of reference of jihadists and Muslims in general. Hamas on Saturday marked its 20th anniversary by vowing to continue the "jihad" against Israel and never recognize its right to exist. Dis they just say Jihad?They are inner struggleing not to recognize Israel and thats done with rockets and suicide belts? How magical. Tens of thousands of Palestinians participated in a main rally organized by Hamas in the center of Gaza City in what was seen as one of the movement's biggest shows of force. All peed off because Fatah is getting the 500 million.They get HamAss and that means butt kickings and forced following. Shouting, "We won't recognize Israel," the Hamas supporters burned Israeli flags and chanted slogans against the US. Hmmm,how much moolah do you suppose they waste on burning Infidel nations flags.I keep hearing about Palestinian trade bit i haven't figured out what it is they trade.Who works to create anything to trade,and why doesn't the other Islamic Nations buy stuff from them? The rally was held in the same square where thousands of Fatah supporters attended a memorial for Yasser Arafat last month. Hamas officials estimated that nearly 250,000 Palestinians participated in the rally as opposed to less than 50,000 who showed up for the Arafat event. My crowd of zombies is bigger than yours.I can hear fatah saying Yea but we are getting 500 million dollars.Now you see the veins bulging in HamAss's forehead. By the way didn't HamAss attack the Fatah gathering over Arafats wing ding? Thanks for bringing that up sir. Fatah representatives claimed that the Hamas rally was a "failure" because of the "small" number of participants. Of course it was a failure you are the other side of the same coin,yep small turn out....sheesh. "This is Hamas's poorest performance since 1997," said Fatah spokesman Jamal Nazzal. "Hamas threatened to cut off the salary [of] and beat any activist who does not bring his family members to the rally. Despite that, they were unable to fill the square, and there were many empty chairs." Cut off the salary of ACTIVISTS? Oh so that is what they trade in.That must be the rage that goes on here in the West.I get it now.So 500 million is going to buy us more imported activists against our way of life? Hmmm. The rally came amid increased tensions between Hamas and Fatah following the arrest of two senior Fatah figures in the Gaza Strip. Well you know how the spy game is played. One can never be too careful,especially if they uncover your spies.I wish my mind worked over time with suspicion so the world could fel sorry for me. One of them, Omar Ghul, is a special adviser to PA Prime Minister Salaam Fayad. He was arrested shortly after returning to the Gaza Strip from Ramallah to participate in the funeral of his mother-in-law. Very suspicious indeed, or is it that Palestinians aren't allowed in Palestinians banned by Palestinians? (puts finger inbetween lips and moves up and down while twirling eyes) Hamas said Ghul was arrested after he entered the Gaza Strip through the Erez border crossing in disguise. The second man who was arrested was Ismail Abu Naja, a former deputy speaker of the Palestinian parliament. Abu Naja was arrested after holding a press conference in Gaza City at which he accused Hamas of killing three Palestinians during a funeral on Friday. So HamAss arresting mischief makers who just happen to be politicians of the opposing party is okay,thats cleaning out the corruption.But Israel going over to arrest them for incitement,murder and who knows what else is just moraly wrong. The three were killed by an explosive device that apparently went off accidentally during the funeral of Islamic Jihad members who had been killed a day earlier in an Israeli attack. Abu Naja and many Fatah officials in Ramallah were quick to blame Hamas for the explosion, saying it was a deliberate attack on civilians. Oh my my do i even want to go there?How dare they kill innocent civilians,well muslim civilians.Hmmm,palestinians killing Palestinians? Blame it on the jooooos thats the ticket. The Palestinian security forces in the West Bank banned Hamas celebrations by deploying hundreds of policemen in main cities and removing all Hamas-affiliated graffiti and flags. Wrong side of the tracks fellas,either join up or get back to your appointed space.And take your flags and crayons with you. An eye for an eye is soooo painful to watch. Several Hamas figures were summoned to the Palestinian security forces and warned not to hold any events marking the Hamas anniversary. Hamas said 26 of its followers were arrested over the weekend in the West Bank by Fatah-controlled forces. Summoned? How do they summon i wonder? Think those 26 had thier beards shaved?Oh the humiliation.Call the U.N. and rights groups.Oh the humanity. "The IDF's withdrawal from Gaza will be nothing like its invasion, the Strip will become a graveyard for its troops," Hamas legislator Mushir al-Masri warned Saturday in his chilling opening address at the Gaza rally. Ha Ha this turd will be the first to hide under the nearest rock.Do you ever hear these guys talk about anything else? I mean my god how pathetic.Israel can b17ch slap these punks anytime it wishes,and without much effort because all these standing in thier brave little or large crowd whichever the truth is,would run and hide behind the first female and child. He said the large turnout was an indication of the increased number of Palestinians who believed in Hamas and didn't accept Israel's right to exist. That large turnout proves every da^n thing i have been saying about palesistinians killing palestinians because destroying Israel and murdering and killing are all that fall fromthe lips of the loser leaders.Give 'em some mo money! Haniyeh pointed out that those who believe in the "resistance" and the concept that "Islam is the solution" have scored a number of victories over the past few years: the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000, the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005, the abduction of IDF Cpl. Gilad Schalit in 2006 and the beginning of the "defeat" of the Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan this year. Mazini said Hamas would never recognize Israel or give up Palestinian rights, including the "right of return" for Palestinian refugees. Well at least he is honest enough to admit that one Isareli,one Jew,is worth thousands of Palestinians.I highly doubt that Schalit is alive.There are others that have been captured and have been missing for over 9,000 days.I think ......nah never mind that wouldn't be proper for me to write at this time.It's too islamic. The Hamas official launched a scathing attack on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and his Fatah faction, accusing them of "selling themselves to the Americans and agreeing to serve as guards for Israeli occupation." However, he reiterated Hamas's readiness to engage in dialogue with Fatah to solve the current crisis. Hamas, he added, "never thought of opening fire at Fatah." He said that, in any case, Hamas would not allow Fatah to bring anarchy and lawlessness back to the Gaza Strip. Mashaal claimed that Israel was using the recent peace conference in Annapolis as a cover for launching a "massive aggression" against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. He also claimed that the US-sponsored conference had given Abbas a green light to "dismantle resistance groups in the West Bank." Well thanks for pointing out that Israel will be lauching a mission once again to try and end the rocket attacks on it's Country,but why so worried? HamAss just stated they have thier graves dug already,isn't that what you want? If i am not mistaken our policy is to NOT deal with terrorists."Resistance" groups who use terrorism as a method of fighting ,and i use that term loosely,very loosely,is still a terrorist group.If i were in charge there would be NO discussion of any kind until they wre ALL dismantled,otherwise the only other discussion would be Palestines complete and total surrender to Israel and all terroists dealt with. The audiotape by Osama bin Laden's deputy was the latest al-Qaida attempt to rally Muslims using the widespread bitterness felt toward Israel over the Palestinian issue. Al-Zawahri focused his anger against Egypt, a top U.S. ally and the first Arab country to sign a peace deal with Israel. He called on Bedouin tribes in his native country to rise up against the rule of President Hosni Mubarak. That wouldn't be a call to The Muslims Brotherhood would it,or the Ikwhan of old? You know the bedouins that put the King of Arabia in his throne and who then named the entire country after himself.I wonder why it was never named Muhammad Arabia or Allah Arabia,or Islam arabia? Eh ,whats in a megalomaniacs name...right? The Nov. 27 peace conference in Annapolis, Md., relaunched Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations and was attended by most Arab nations. Participants included leading players Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Syria — despite their initial reluctance about a gathering many Arabs worried would not commit Israel to making concessions. HAH,in other words they figured why bother? Israel isn't going to surrender unconditionally anyways.But i guess it was a chance to get out of the house,and hey you never know. "The Annapolis meeting was held to turn Palestine into a Jewish state," al-Zawahri said in the 20-minute audio recording posted on an Islamic militant Web forum. The posting carried a still photo of the white-turbaned al-Zawahri against a backdrop photograph from the Maryland conference. The best thing that could ever happen to the "Palestinians" is that they would become part of the Jewish NATION-State. "The czar of Washington invited 16 Arab countries ... to sit in one room, at one table with the Israelis," al-Zawahri said, adding the conference "witnessed the betrayal deals to sell Palestine." HAH,insulting words to an intelligent person."Palestine" hasn't sold out nor given up anything,it only takes and takes.Of course these words will work on the morons there in Pally land because they will look at what they have and what Israel has and think thier leaders,some of them, have given "Palestine" away. Blah,blah blah.....this statement is about as old as the one after every post about Irans Nuclear situation where they say...."Iran says thier Nuclear work is for peaceful and civilian use"...blah ,blah,blah The site also had a banner advertising an upcoming "interview" of al-Zawahri by al-Sahab, with a picture of him in a white traditional Arab robe and white turban, seated before a bookshelf. Such notices are usually posted up to 72 hours before the message is released. Well good a video to look forward to.Maybe it will have some of those fantastic peaceful verses they like to quote where they tell thier wonderful and peaceful,those oh so "few extremists,those hijackers of a truly peaceful religion,where it is commanded by Allah to separate our heads from our necks and the tips of our fingers from our hands. Of course we Infidels who are not sound asleep and take these words for what they really mean for to be taken will take them out of context as we are truly ignorant of Islam and racists and Islamophobes. The Egyptian-born al-Zawahri denounced Mubarak's government, saying it had turned Egypt into a "base to supply the Crusader war on Muslims and Islam." He denounced Egypt's sealing of its border with Gaza after the takeover of the Palestinian territory by the militant group Hamas and Cairo's support for the government of Palestinian Prsident Mahmoud Abbas. Hmmm,Egypt didn't allow a Palestinian tent city that would have turned into a more permanent mud brick city? Don't worry though as i am sure there is plenty of weapons that still make it's way to the Palestinians in thier "struggle and resistance." Probably all done underground....like worms. He called on Bedouin living in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on the border with Gaza and Israel to rise up against Mubarak, who he said wants to "turn you into subjects in the Israeli obscene trade in Sinai resorts" — a reference to Red Sea beach resorts frequented by Israelis. I still can't help but wonder why the call only to the Bedouin? Does he mean the Muslim Brotherhood,the Ikwhan of old? really it makes no difference to me as i have learned a long time ago...Islam is Islam. However Mubarak is in for some trouble as we can all imagine.On the other hand Muslims have a way with dealing with Muslims and the justifications for such dealings can always be found for doing so. Another conclusion i have come to is that the whole "To kill even one is as if you have killed all of humanity,to save one is to have saved all of humanity" is just jibberish and a joke.Islam has killed all of humanity with the first slash of it's blade.Islam is a lie and a farce at every turn. From 2004-2006, a series of terror bombings hit Egyptian resorts in the Sinai, killing 121 people. Al-Zawahri also called on the Egyptian military not to be "assistants to the Crusaders and Jews in imposing siege on your brothers" and to "let the needs of your brothers in Palestine pass" into Gaza. Yep,the true and pious stand and be counted.Kill all of humanity to save all of humanity....well kill all of humanity as long as you exterminate the Jews and take that sliver of land that muslims don't worship but who desire every inch of throughout the world. For much of the recording, al-Zawahri also denounced an Islamic militant ideologue who, after years in an Egyptian prison, has published a treatise known as the "revisions," renouncing militant violence. Hmmm,must have something to do with that Muslims know how to handle Muslims thing i mentioned earlier. He saw the light....HAH...Islam is Islam! He must have been working on cutting a deal. The jailed ideologue, Sayed Imam, was once a top leader in Egypt's Islamic Jihad group and an associate of al-Zawahri. Imam's writings in the 1980s spelled a basis in Islamic law for violence against "infidel" regimes and were highly influential among al-Qaida militants. But his "revisions," published last month, argue such violence is banned under Islamic law. Like i said once in prison he and many others see the light.They found the true allah....need i say it?...Islam is Islam. "Those revisionists are in fact calling for a new American religion that violates God's rules," al-Zawahri said. The message was the 15th tape or video released by al-Zawahri this year. The War Room Blog would like to acknowledge Al Qaeda in it's long running Saga,story line and acting by giving the leadership an award i hope they will stow it away with all thier other prized possesions.  Sorry it couldn't have been a larger trophy!!! Al-Zawahri — seen by many experts to be al-Qaida's operational chief, rather than bin Laden — is believed to play a major role in directing al-Qaida's strategy and often also details the group's doctrinal line. This is just yet more proof as to what i said here in this post (Click HERE for the link) and that was that Palestinians kill more Palestinians than Israel ever has and ever will.The reason for this post in the first place is cleared up,i think, in the original post linked above in case you were wondering. Mainly as my proof as to my opinion of said topic i provided the link to the Muslims own holy book ,the qur'an.And i will ask again.Is that not proof enough to back up my opinion? As i moved on in the original post i also added that it was Islams educational system that kills Palestinians by the hands of Palestinians,which i also backed up with a link to thier own holy book,the qur'an,again is that not proof enough? So here from the Jihadwatch web site is proof of what i have stated in that earlier post and i could add many so many more but once again i will ask at which link that i add as proof of my opinion would you become convinced? By the way this post is aimed at the crocodile food,not the choir.This post as the post i above mentioned is for those polishers of that tightly coiled pile on the neighbors lawn,Islam.They shine and buff and buff and shine still all they manage to do is stink up the air.Well i am tired of breathing that stinking air. I have to clear something up here.I am not mortally wounded because a couple of wankers show thier true colors,which is white with blood dripping down it.I was only taken aback by a couple of things of which you will find written about below.So i had a comment deleted NO BIGGIE,it's not like it was deleted from Jihad watch or some upstanding forum.I just didn't care for a few things at this group and i didn't see much hope of it getting any better.The game is as the game shall be.There are still some upstanding people that go there and in one case i think a friend of mine even backed me up quite a bit,hat tip to you know who as i won't mention any names because they still may visit the group, i truly don't know.In any case as a departing gift i just wanted to back up my claim which is outlined below.I will admit i took a different route ...well just because it seemed better to me than the first route i was set on taking.Read on if you wish. Palestinians have killed far more of thier own citizens than Israel has killed of Palestinians.That was a comment i made in this group the "Terrorism" group on another post that got deleted because without a link to my comment or opinion,that was up for debate by the way,it was deemed Misinformation.It was no biggie really to be deleted ,with what seemed like a smile on the deleters face.It was the feeling that i was being censored for my view that bothers me.And to be told i was anti islam,which makes me think of racist,bigot,Islamophobe or a down right hater.That is not acceptable to me.And anyone with any sense knows the kind of person uses such words and intimidation.Or justification for whatever thier purpose of the use of such things may be. I don't know of any other topic for the last sixty years that could use more debate and opinion,or thought, than the palestinian and Israeli "conflict."Also is it not all the ranting and raving that this very "conflict" and the backing of Israel by the U.S. and others,barely any others,are the reasons for the Terrorism that goes on today?Isn't this the FIRST issue we should work on resolving if it is the cause of all the current "conflicts" around the world? Or is it that this has become so much the norm that well thats just the way it is. The kicker is that in an interview with a muslim male who was celebrating the courts decision he was asked what he was so happy about and his reply was that he was happy she was not allowed to leave islam because he FEARED that if she were allowed to "convert away from Islam"then there would be a FLOOD of muslims who would want to leave,want out of Islam.So the reason here in this case that i have no respect for islam is in that she is FORCED to be a muslim,she is FORCED to marry whomever someone else decides she should marry whether she loves them or not.And quite simply because at the penalty of death all these things are forced upon her.So i do not hate muslims.I do however despise islam. Spencer: Blogging the Qur'an Blogging the Qur’an: Sura 9, “Repentance,” verse 29 Verse 29 of chapter 9 of the Qur’an is the one place where Muslims are directed explicitly to make war against and subjugate Jews and Christians – the “People of the Book,” who once subjugated enter the dhimma, the protection of the Muslims, and become dhimmis, protected (or guilty) people. As such, the way this verse is understood by Muslim interpreters is of cardinal importance for Jews, Christians, and – not least because in the Islamic world one’s religion tends to be considered as part of one’s ethnic identity, not as a matter of personal conviction, so that even Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens would be considered Christians — non-Muslims in general. According to As-Sawi, Ibn Juzayy, and many others, “this ayat was revealed when the Messenger of Allah was commanded to fight the Byzantines. When it was sent down, the Messenger of Allah prepared for the expedition to Tabuk.” Ibn Kathir agrees: “Allah commanded His Messenger to fight the People of the Scriptures, Jews and Christians, on the ninth year of Hijrah, and he prepared his army to fight the Romans and called the people to Jihad announcing his intent and destination.” This was a raid Muhammad attempted against the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) garrison at Tabuk in northern Arabia in 631, but the Byzantine force moved away before Muhammad got there, and did not engage the Muslims in battle. Still, it was his first attempt to take on the great Christian empire that the Muslims would chip away at for centuries and ultimately destroy. 
Ibn Juzayy says that this verse is “a command to fight the People of the Book” and, in a reference to v. 30, “denying their belief in Allah because of the words of the Jews, ‘Uzayr [Ezra] is the son of Allah’ and the words of the Christians, ‘The Messiah is the son of Allah.’” Muslims must also fight them “because they consider as lawful carrion, blood, pork, etc.” and because “they do not enter Islam.” He says that “scholars agree about accepting jizya [a religious-based poll tax] from the Jews and Christians,” and adds that “the Magians/Zoroasterians have been added to them going by the words of the Prophet, ‘Treat them as People of the Book,’” although “there is disagreement about accepting it from idolaters and Sabians.” He specifies that “it is not collected from women, children or the insane,” and that it signifies “submission and obedience.” While Islamic law does stipulate that the jizya is not to be collected from women and children, reality in many cases has been different. According to the pioneering historian of dhimmitude, Bat Ye’or: The poll tax was extorted by torture. The tax inspectors demanded gifts for themselves; widows and orphans were pillaged and despoiled. In theory, women, paupers, the sick, and the infirm were exempt from the poll tax; nevertheless, Armenian, Syriac, and Jewish sources provide abundant proof that the jizya was exacted from children, widows, orphans, and even the dead. A considerable number of extant documents, preserved over the centuries, testify to the persistence and endurance of these measures. In Aleppo in 1683, French Consul Chevalier Laurent d’Arvieux noted that ten-year-old Christian children paid the jizya. Here again, one finds the disparity and contradiction between the ideal in the theory and the reality of the facts. (The Decline of Eastern Christianity Under Islam, pp. 78-9). The Tafsir al-Jalalayn says that this when v. 29 specifies that Muslims must fight against those who “follow not the Religion of Truth,” it means those who do not follow Islam, “which is firm and abrogates other deens [religions].” Ibn Kathir gives a hint as to why this is so when he explains that the People of the Book were in bad faith when they rejected Muhammad, and that they are not true believers even in their own religions: Therefore, when People of the Scriptures disbelieved in Muhammad, they had no beneficial faith in any Messenger or what the Messengers brought. Rather, they followed their religions because this conformed with their ideas, lusts and the ways of their forefathers, not because they are Allah’s Law and religion. Had they been true believers in their religions, that faith would have directed them to believe in Muhammad, because all Prophets gave the good news of Muhammad’s advent and commanded them to obey and follow him. Yet when he was sent, they disbelieved in him, even though he is the mightiest of all Messengers. Therefore, they do not follow the religion of earlier Prophets because these religions came from Allah, but because these suit their desires and lusts. Therefore, their claimed faith in an earlier Prophet will not benefit them because they disbelieved in the master, the mightiest, the last and most perfect of all Prophets. As-Sawi specifies that the payment of the jizya signifies that the non-Muslims are “humble and obedient to the judgements of Islam.” As-Suyuti notes that the jizya is “not taken from someone in a state of hardship,” although that was a stipulation at times honored in the breach. For example, a contemporary account of the Muslims’ conquest of Nikiou, an Egyptian town, in the 640’s, says that “it is impossible to describe the lamentable position of the inhabitants of this town, who came to the point of offering their children in exchange for the enormous sums that they had to pay each month…” This was a manifestation of the “state of abasement” specified by this verse and spelled out by the Bedouin commander al-Mughira bin Sa’d when he met the Persian Rustam. Said al-Mughira: “I call you to Islam or else you must pay the jizya while you are in a state of abasement.” Rustam replied, “I know what jizya means, but what does ‘a state of abasement’ mean?” Al-Mughira explained: “You pay it while you are standing and I am sitting and the whip hanging is over your head.” Similarly, Ibn Kathir says that the dhimmis must be “disgraced, humiliated and belittled. Therefore, Muslims are not allowed to honor the people of Dhimmah or elevate them above Muslims, for they are miserable, disgraced and humiliated.” The seventh-century jurist Sa’id ibn al-Musayyab stated: “I prefer that the people of the dhimma become tired by paying the jizya since He says, ‘until they pay the jizya with their own hands in a state of complete abasement.’” As-Suyuti elaborates that this verse “is used as a proof by those who say that it is taken in a humiliating way, and so the taker sits and the dhimmi stands with his head bowed and his back bent. “Instructions and guidelines for fighting and killing in the cause of Allah” Here is the latest in my Blogging the Qur’an series at Hot Air: Sura 9, “Repentance,” verses 14-28 (many links in the original): In March 2006, a twenty-two-year-old Iranian student named Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar drove an SUV onto the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, deliberately trying to kill people and succeeding in injuring nine. After the incident, he seemed singularly pleased with himself, smiling and waving to crowds after a court appearance at which he explained that he was “thankful for the opportunity to spread the will of Allah.” Later he wrote six letters to the Daily Tar Heel, the student newspaper of the University of North Carolina, explaining why he did it. In one of them, he gives a list of “Qur’an Notes Relevant to 3/3/06 Attack.” These include “Instructions and guidelines for fighting and killing in the cause of Allah.” Under “Reasons for fighting in the cause of Allah,” he cited verses 14 and 15 of sura 9, explaining that fight was “to release anger and rage from Allah’s followers’ hearts.” And indeed, in those verses Allah promises that as he punishes the unbelievers at the hands of the believers and covers them with shame, he will “heal the breasts of believers, and still the indignation of their hearts.” Ibn Juzayy and the Tafsir al-Jalalayn, however, focus on the portion of the verse that says that “Allah turns to anyone He wills.” Ibn Juzayy explains: “Allah will turn to some of those unbelievers and so that they become Muslims.” That decision, as we have seen, is all Allah’s. Allah will not leave bereft those who “strive with might and main” (v. 16). The word used here is jahadu (جَاهَدُواْ), a form of “jihad,” as it is rendered here. Then verses 17-22 declare that the idolaters or polytheists (mushrikeena, ْمُشْرِكِينَ, from mushrik, polytheist) are not worthy to take care of the Sacred Mosque in Mecca – although at the time of the revelation of this sura the pagans still control that mosque. They control it, but as comments Ibn Juzayy, “they do not have either the right or the duty to do so. They inhabit them through forceful occupation and injustice.” They have no right to the mosque because, according to Ibn Kathir and, indeed, generalized Islamic tradition, Abraham himself built it as a shrine to Allah. Verses 23-28 tell the believers to separate from and fight the unbelievers. The believers should cut ties even with their own families if they are not Muslims (verses 23-24). Says Ibn Kathir: “Allah commands shunning the disbelievers, even if they are one’s parents or children, and prohibits taking them as supporters if they choose disbelief instead of faith.” Ibn Juzayy notes that v. 24, with its warning that one should value nothing in this life higher than Allah, is “a threat to anyone who prefers his family, property or home to emigration and jihad.” “Emigration” refers to the move to Medina which at that time was incumbent upon all true believers. Verses 25 and 26 refer to the Battle of Hunayn, which took place after Muhammad conquered Mecca. Once he was the master of Mecca, there was one additional great obstacle between him and mastery of all Arabia. Malik ibn ‘Awf, a member of the Hawazin tribe of the city of Ta’if, south of Mecca, began to assemble a force to fight the Muslims. The people of Ta’if had rejected Muhammad and treated him shabbily when he presented his prophetic claim to them ten years earlier. They were historic rivals of the Quraysh, and viewed the conversion of the latter to Islam with disdain. Malik assembled a force and marched out to face the Muslims; Muhammad, according to Ibn Ishaq, met him with an army 12,000 strong, and said, in an echo of v. 25 (“your great numbers delighted you”), “We shall not be worsted today for want of numbers.” The two forces met at a wadi – a dry riverbed — called Hunayn, near Mecca. Malik and his men had arrived first and taken up positions that gave them an immense tactical advantage. The Muslims, despite their superior numbers, were routed. As they broke ranks and fled, Muhammad called out: “Where are you going, men? Come to me. I am God’s apostle. I am Muhammad the son of ‘Abdullah.” Some of the Muslims did take heart, and gradually the tide began to turn – although with tremendous loss of life on both sides. The Muslims eventually prevailed, wiping out the last major force that stood between the Prophet of Islam and mastery of Arabia. After the battle Muhammad received another revelation explaining that the Muslims had won because of supernatural help (v. 26). With Malik defeated, the Muslims later conquered Ta’if with little resistance. On his way into the city, Muhammad stopped under a tree, and, finding the property to his liking, sent word to the owner: “Either come out or we will destroy your wall.” But the owner refused to appear before Muhammad, so the Muslims indeed destroyed his property. Endeavoring, however, to win the tribesmen of Ta’if to Islam, Muhammad was lenient toward them. In his distribution of the booty, he also favored some of the recent converts among the Quraysh, hoping to cement their allegiance to Islam. His favoritism, however, led to grumbling. One Muslim approached him boldly: “Muhammad, I’ve seen what you have done today…I don’t think you have been just.” The Prophet of Islam was incredulous. “If justice is not to be found with me then where will you find it?” Indeed, for Islam Muhammad’s words and deeds are the highest pattern of conduct, forming the only absolute standard: anything sanctioned by the example of the Prophet is good. According to Ibn Juzayy, the promise that “Allah will turn to whomever he wills” (v. 27) means that “the tribe of Hawazin who had fought the Muslims at Hunayn became Muslim.” The unbelievers are unclean, and thus must not enter the Sacred Mosque (v. 28). Shi’ites in particular regard this as a matter of ritual purity. The Ayatollah Sistani, whom many observers have identified as a beacon of democratic hope for Iraq, likely does not envision a state in which unbelievers have equal rights with believers, since he puts non-Muslims on the level of other impure things: The following ten things are essentially najis [impure, unclean]: 1. 8. Kafir [unbeliever]
9. Alcoholic liquors
10. The sweat of an animal who persistently eats najasat This idea is based on v. 28. The Tafsir al-Jalalayn says that the polytheists are “impure because of their inward foulness,” and As-Suyuti adds that some say “they are actually impure so that they must do ghusl [the full ablution] if they become Muslim and one must do wudu’ [the partial ablution] after shaking hands with them.” As-Suyuti also notes that this verse forbids unbelievers to enter the Sacred Mosque in Mecca, although he points out that “Abu Hanifa says that People of the Book are not prevented because it is specific to idolaters.” Because of Muhammad’s prohibition on non-Muslims in Arabia, it is unlikely that a member of the People of the Book would be able to enter Mecca today.
